Make the Most of One Day on Cape Cod: A Local's Perfect Day Trip Itinerary

Whether you're taking the ferry from Boston to Provincetown or driving up from Falmouth for a day exploring the Outer Cape, it's absolutely possible to experience some of Cape Cod's best sights, food, and scenery in just one day.

As a local, here's how I would spend a perfect day making the most of a Cape Cod adventure.

Start with a Scenic Drive

If you're coming from off-Cape or the Upper Cape, skip the highway for a while and enjoy the beauty of Route 6A. Stretching through many of Cape Cod's historic villages, this scenic road is lined with charming cafés, antique shops, classic New England homes, colorful gardens, and occasional marsh views.

Before heading farther up Cape, fuel up with coffee and breakfast at one of these local favorites:

  • Eat Cake for Breakfast (Brewster)

  • Lighthouse Keeper's Pantry (Yarmouth) — a viral favorite that often draws a crowd during peak summer weekends

  • Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters (Brewster)

Grab your coffee and enjoy one of the prettiest drives on Cape Cod.

Stop at Nauset Light

As you continue toward Provincetown, plug Nauset Light into your GPS and make a quick detour to one of Cape Cod's most iconic landmarks—the lighthouse featured on the Cape Cod Potato Chips bag.

Even if you're short on time, this stop is worth it.

For the best views, follow this route:

Nauset High School → Nauset Light → Coast Guard Beach

The overlook near Coast Guard Station offers one of the most spectacular ocean views on Cape Cod seen right from your car.

Spend the Day in Provincetown

The earlier you arrive in Provincetown during the summer, the easier parking will be. That said, there is plenty of public parking available, so don't stress if you're arriving later in the day.

Once you've parked, leave the car behind and enjoy one of the most walkable towns on Cape Cod.

The biggest question is: what kind of day are you looking for?

You could spend a few hours on a whale watch and experience one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world. Or you could dedicate your time to shopping, eating, people-watching, and exploring Commercial Street.

Want to go to the beach? You can even get a 10 minute water taxi trom MacMillian Pier o Long Point Beach and enjoy an hour or so on this remote beach.

Provincetown can be a two-hour stop—or it can easily fill your entire day.

Don't Miss:

Irene's Little Art Shop
Located right on MacMillan Pier, Irene is a local Cape Cod artist selling her watercolor at prints and hand made souvenirs right off of the pier. Enjoy all the local shops lining MacMillian pier offering a setting unlike anywhere else on Cape Cod.

The Canteen
A casual waterfront favorite offering creative takes on Cape Cod classics, outdoor seating, and fun cocktails.

The Lobster Pot
A Provincetown institution and one of the best spots in town for a classic seafood lunch.

The West End
Take a stroll through Provincetown's picturesque West End, where colorful cottages, gardens, and water views seem to appear around every corner.

The Flag House
One of Provincetown's most photographed landmarks and a must-stop for visitors exploring Commercial Street.

Drive Back Along Shore Road

As you leave Provincetown, skip Route 6 for a bit and take Shore Road through Provincetown and Truro.

This scenic coastal route offers some of the best views on the entire Cape, with dunes, beaches, and glimpses of the ocean around nearly every bend.

It's one of those drives where you'll want to roll down the windows and take your time.

Explore Wellfleet

On your way back down Cape, make a stop in Wellfleet.

Drive through the town center, browse the local shops, and take a quick walk around the harbor. If you're ready for a snack, grab a seat outside at The Pearl for fresh oysters and a raw bar experience overlooking the water.

If you're looking for something more adventurous, head over to The Beachcomber. Situated above Cahoon Hollow Beach, it's one of Cape Cod's most iconic beach bar destinations.

Even if you don't stop, be sure to take Ocean View Drive to admire Wellfleet's famous dunes—some of the most dramatic scenery on the Cape.

Catch Sunset in Chatham

If you're still up for one final stop, end your day in Chatham.

Visit Chatham Lighthouse, take a stroll down Main Street, and soak in the classic Cape Cod atmosphere. The charming shops, hydrangea-lined streets, and coastal scenery make it one of the most beloved towns on Cape Cod.

During the summer, many restaurants require reservations, but there are still plenty of options for a memorable dinner.

The Chatham Fish Pier is one of my favorite stops. Grab a lobster roll from the takeout window, watch the fishing boats unload their catch, and look for the dozens of seals that often gather in the harbor.

Dinner with a View

If you're heading back toward the bridges, another fantastic dinner option is Sesuit Harbor Café in Dennis.

This beloved waterfront spot serves one of the best lobster rolls on Cape Cod, along with incredible harbor views. Grab a picnic table, watch the boats come and go, and enjoy a quintessential Cape Cod summer evening.

If timing works out, sunset from Sesuit Harbor is hard to beat.

One Last Stop: Ice Cream

No Cape Cod day trip is complete without ice cream.

Whether you stop at a roadside stand, a local creamery, or your favorite family-owned shop on the drive home, ending the day with an ice cream cone feels like the perfect Cape Cod tradition.

And that's the beauty of Cape Cod—even in just one day, you can experience charming villages, ocean views, lighthouses, local seafood, shopping, art, beaches, and unforgettable scenery.

Of course, one day is never really enough. But it's more than enough to make you start planning your next visit.
